What is a CCN1 gas safety qualification? How Much Does It Cost, and How Can I Get One?

For anyone considering a career in the gas industry or looking to renew their existing gas safety competence, understanding the CCN1 gas safety qualification is essential. At The Energy Training Academy in Edinburgh, we’ve developed comprehensive gas training programs that cover core domestic gas safety and provide the training needed for both new entrants and experienced gas operatives whose certification requires renewal.

Understanding Core Domestic Gas Safety and CCN1

A valid CCN1 is an essential qualification for every engineer, including those just entering the industry for the first time. That’s why we include CCN1 as part of our 27-week Foundations in Gas Engineering course (formerly known as the Managed Learning Programme, MLP). The CCN1 qualification focuses on core domestic gas safety and is the fundamental certification required for gas installers working with domestic gas appliances in the UK. This certification proves your competence in gas safety and serves as sufficient proof of your ability to work safely with existing gas supply systems and various gas appliances.

Course Content and Practical Assessment

Our certified training programme comprehensively covers:

Fundamental Gas Safety Skills

Understanding gas emergency actions and emergency isolation controls is crucial for every gas engineer. You’ll learn about unsafe situations, emergency notices, and proper procedures for handling gas-related emergencies.

Technical Competencies

The course includes detailed training on setting appliance burner pressures, combustion ventilation installation, and combustion performance analysis. You’ll learn to work with meter regulators and accurately measure gas rates, which are essential skills for any gas operative.

Appliance Expertise

We provide thorough training on various appliances, including central heating boilers, water heaters, wall heaters, and space heaters. You’ll learn to safely install, maintain, and relight appliances while adhering to current chimney standards.

Costs and Course Duration

Our CCN1 course fee ranges from £395 to £640 (+VAT), with the final costs depending on which appliances you choose to include in your certification. The course typically takes 3-5 days to complete, representing excellent value for money considering the comprehensive training provided.

The base fee covers your initial assessment and practical tests. You can enhance your qualification with additional appliance categories, including:

• Central Heating & Water Training & Assessment (CENWAT)
• Domestic Gas Cooking Appliances (CKR1)
• Gas Fire and Water Heaters (HTR1)

Assessment Process and Certification

The assessment process combines both theoretical knowledge and practical tests. During your practical assessment, you’ll need to provide evidence of your competency across various areas. This includes demonstrating your understanding of the following:

• Safe handling of existing gas supply systems
• Proper use of emergency isolation controls
• Accurate setting of appliance burner pressures
• Effective combustion performance analysis
• Proper installation of combustion ventilation

After successful completion of both theoretical and practical assessments, you’ll receive your ACS qualifications. These remain valid for five years from the expiry date, after which a refresher CCN1 & Appliances course is required. It’s worth noting that when renewing your CCN1, you can stack up to 6 extra months on top of the 5-year period – meaning you could benefit from up to 5 years and 6 months of certification by renewing early rather than waiting until the last minute.

Training Facilities and Support

Our state-of-the-art training centre in Dalkeith, near Edinburgh, provides all the facilities needed for comprehensive gas safety training. We maintain high standards in our practical training areas, ensuring you get hands-on experience with the latest gas appliances and equipment.

For those with onsite working experience or those who have undertaken previous gas training in the last six months, we can take this into account when structuring your learning programme. Our experienced instructors provide support throughout your training journey, ensuring you’re well-prepared for both the practical assessment and real-world work.

Career Progression and Gas Safe Registration

Upon completion of your CCN1 qualification and any additional ACS qualifications you choose to undertake, you’ll be eligible to join the Gas Safe Register. This registration is essential for anyone working legally as a gas installer in the UK.

The complete CCN1 course provides a solid foundation for your career in the gas industry. Whether you’re focusing on domestic gas safety, central heating systems, or specific gas appliances, your certification demonstrates your competence to both employers and customers.
